The Storm Shelter Registry is a service for Redings Mill Fire District residents to provide information about their storm shelters to help first responders in case of an emergency.

Registering your storm shelter is a simple process. Just tell us your address, the type of shelter you have, where it is located and whether it is a residential or commercial shelter. (If providing GPS coordinates please use Decimal Degrees, ex. Lat. 37.863254 Long. -94.687541)

You may also provide the name and phone number of an emergency contact person. This additional contact information is optional and not required to register your shelter.

All information you provide will be used by first responders — police, fire, and emergency medical service — to help with emergency response, in the event your home or neighborhood are affected by a tornado or other disaster.

You can register here.

One of the most important things you can do in your home is have a working smoke detector. According to the National Fire Protection Association 60% of fire fatalities took place in a home without a working smoke detector. And having a working smoke detector cuts your risk of dying in your home due to fire by 50%. If your building a new home, hard wired smoke detectors are the best way to go. If not hard wired, there are smoke detectors available with 10 year batteries that don’t require new batteries every year. Even if you have an older version, keeping the batteries changed and testing them every 6 months can save your life! Redings Mill Fire District is committed to providing smoke detectors to residences in our fire district that may not be able to afford them. Give us a call or provide your information in the form below and we’ll contact you for a date and time to install a new smoke detector.

To accomplish this we offer a wide range of public education opportunities:

o Station Tours – Bring your family, your class, or just yourself and visit our station. Firefighters will show you our equipment, what we do, and how we do it. Kids love to climb on the fire trucks and parents don’t forget your camera, many photo opportunities are available during your visit.

o Puppet Show – A fun learning experience for all children ages 3 – 9 as puppets entertain the children through songs designed to teach your children the dangers of fire and how to stay safe during a fire. Minimum of 5 children required for a puppet show.

o Burney – Burney has been the cornerstone of our public education program for many years. Burney is a vehicle that shows children the devastating effects of fire. This vehicle that was developed entirely through donations from our community and the Missouri Department of Conservation features a child’s bedroom in the back that has the furniture and toys burned. A smoke machine is also installed in the bedroom showing children the importance of staying low and crawling out to safety.

o Live S.A.F.E. – Our public education program that is designed to bring safety to your home. Live S.A.F.E. stands for smoke alarms, assess for dangers, formulate a plan, and escape. At your request, firefighters will visit your home and assess your home for safety hazards both inside and outside the home. Utilizing a firewise assessment sheet we will make recommendations on how to safeguard your home from wildfires, inside the home we will look for hazards that could cause a fire. Firefighters will also check your smoke alarms to ensure they are working correctly and install smoke alarms if you do not have them. We will then sit down with you and your children and draw an escape plan specific to your home. Finally, as a family, our firefighters will practice the escape plan with you and your children ensuring that everyone is ready if a fire occurs.

o Juvenile Firesetter Program – Is it simple curiosity or is it a problem that needs attention. Our organization is a part of a local coalition of fire agencies, law enforcement, child service providers, and mental health care professionals that will evaluate a child to determine how serious the problem is if they are playing with fire. After this assessment is complete an education program will be tailored to the child teaching them the dangers of fire and why it is important to not play with fire.

Here are some tips for safe burning of leaves and yard debris.

Comply with Local Regulations:

Contact your local fire department in advance to confirm that burning is allowed and to find out whether a permit is required to burn debris.

Check the Weather Forecast

Weather fluctuations, such as sudden gusts of wind, could make debris burning spark a wildfire. Call your local fire department the day you plan to burn debris to finalize that the weather is safe enough to burn.

Choose a Safe Burning Site

A safe site will be far away from power lines, overhanging limbs, buildings, automobiles, and equipment. It will have vertical clearance at least three times the height of the pile, as heat from the fire extends far past the actual flames that you see. It will have horizontal clearance twice the height of the debris pile.

Prepare the Site Correctly:

The ground around the burn site should be surrounded by gravel or mineral soil (dirt) for at least ten feet in all directions. Keep the surrounding area watered down during the burn.

If using a Burn Barrel, Make Sure it is Equipped with the Proper Features

Burn Barrels must be made of all-metal construction in good condition (no rust on the sides or bottom) and properly ventilated with three evenly-spaced, three-inch square vents spaced evenly around the rim near ground level. Each vent must be backed by a metal screen. A Burn Barrel must have a metal top screen with mesh size of one-fourth inch or finer to keep sparks from escaping and potentially sparking a wildfire. When burning, layer the different types of debris and stir often. Be careful of sparks escaping the barrel when you stir it.

Remain With your Fire

Stay with your fire until it is completely out. To ensure the fire has been completely extinguished, drown the fire with water, turn over the ashes with a shovel and drown it again. Repeat several times. Check the burn area regularly over the next several days and up to several weeks following the burn, especially if the weather is warm, dry, and windy.

Keep it Legal

It is illegal to burn plastic, tires, and most other waste products not from a tree or shrub.

You can get more information from Smokey Bear.com

You could save a life with Hands-Only CPR

Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an “out-of-hospital” setting (such as at home, at work or in a park). It consists of two easy steps:

1.Call 9-1-1 (or send someone to do that).
2.Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.

When you call 911, you need to stay on the phone until the 911 dispatcher (operator) tells you to hang up. The dispatcher will ask you about the emergency. They will also ask for details like your location. It is important to be specific, especially if you’re calling from a mobile phone as that is not associated with a fixed location or address. Remember that answering the dispatcher’s questions will not delay the arrival of help.
