Understanding Your ISO Fire Protection Rating
Whether we like it or not, paying for insurance is a fact of life. Homeowner and business insurance companies use many factors when determining the cost of your premiums. One major factor is the level of fire protection. Most insurance carriers use what is known as ISO to determine the quality of fire protection available and therefore establish insurance rates.
ISO stands for Insurance Services Office. ISO uses standardized guidelines to evaluate fire protection capabilities in communities across the United States. These evaluations provide insurance companies with information they may use when determining property insurance premiums.
A fire department’s rating is based on several factors, including staffing, personnel training, available water supply, equipment, emergency communications, and the department’s ability to respond effectively to fires.
For insurance companies, understanding the capabilities of a fire department helps determine the level of fire protection available to a property. Generally, stronger fire protection can reduce the potential for significant property loss and may be one of the factors considered when insurance rates are established.
Understanding ISO Ratings
ISO classifications range from 1 through 10. A Class 1 represents the highest level of recognized fire protection, while a Class 10 indicates that the property does not meet the applicable criteria for recognized protection.
Redings Mill Fire Protection District currently has a Class 4 rating in hydranted areas and a Class 5 rating in non-hydranted areas.
These classifications apply to homes located within five road miles of one of the district’s five fire stations. If the driving distance to a station is greater than five miles, an insurance provider may classify the property differently, potentially as Class 10 or non-protected.
Approximately 98% of homes within Redings Mill Fire District are located within five road miles of a fire station.
Factors Considered in Fire Protection Ratings
Several factors are considered when evaluating a community’s fire protection capabilities, including:
- The fire department must have sufficient pumper capacity to suppress a fire in buildings within the community.
- The fire department must have 24-hour central dispatch capabilities for contacting firefighters on duty through appropriate communications systems.
- The department must maintain fully equipped reserve apparatus.
- Annual testing must be conducted on equipment such as pumper trucks, fire hoses, and hydrants.
- A minimum number of firefighters must be active within the department and available to respond to alarms.
- Firefighter training must meet applicable minimum standards.
- The department must be capable of providing the required fire flow for homes and businesses through a public water supply, tanker shuttle, or other available water-supply operations.
How ISO Ratings Relate to Insurance
ISO ratings are one of several factors that may affect property insurance premiums. Other considerations can include the age of a structure, construction materials, property value, loss history within an area, deductible amounts, multiple-policy discounts, security systems, and other factors established by the insurance provider.
Your insurance company ultimately determines how these factors and the applicable fire protection classification affect your individual policy and premium.
