Redings Mill Fire Protection District’s budget provides a wide array of services to our fire district residents and visitors, including fire, medical, and technical rescue response, as well as emergency management and public education programs. Our current budget provides $1.2 million dollars in funding for 20 volunteer, 15 career staff members, 6 stations and 22 different apparatus. To outfit one firefighter in protective gear is about $3500.00, the breathing apparatus we wear during fires is now $6100.00 each and a basic new fire apparatus is $385,000.00 without equipment.
Although our budget covers the yearly costs, we have very few funds left for purchases of specialized or updated equipment.

In 2015, members of the fire department created the Redings Mill Firefighter’s Charities. This non-profit organization gained the IRS 501(C)(3) Federal Non-Profit status. Donations made to Redings Mill Firefighter’s Charities are tax deductible, and could provide funding that would allow the charity to purchase and donate needed equipment to Redings Mill Fire Protection District. Below are some current equipment needs:
Swift Water Rescue Boat Motor and Trailer – Redings Mill Fire District received a Regional Homeland Security grant in August of 2016. This grant provided equipment and training to create a swift water rescue team in conjunction with a neighboring department. Included with the grant were two inflatable boats, motors and trailers. Unfortunately a clause in the federal grant program eliminated these items from the grant. Therefore we have the hardware, personal protective equipment and training funded but still need the boats. The cost of the boat, motor and trailer package is $14,127.15 for a total of $28,254.30 for two boats. We need funding for these in the Spring of 2017 in order to complete training in the Summer.
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors- If there is one key thing that we at Redings Mill Fire District can do to help save lives, it is to provide smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to residents who need them. In 2014 we identified a huge need in the mobile home park communities in Redings Mill. We have 12 mobile home parks with over 650 mobile homes and we found that a majority of them didn’t have smoke detectors. We made a goal to go to every mobile home park and offer to provide and install a smoke detector in every home. In addition where homes are heated with natural gas or propane we are also providing a carbon monoxide detector. Currently we have about 25% of the mobile home parks completed but we are waiting on funds to purchase more detectors. The detectors average $9.00 each and we supply the volunteer time to install them properly.
